چکیده

Welcome to this special issue of the Open Neuroimaging Journal which focuses on physiological MRI as reviewed by a panel of leaders in the field. The use of MRI to investigate brain physiology has grown at a very rapid pace. The spatial resolution and spatial specificity of neuronal activiation as detected by fMRI have markedly improved over the past decade. The fMRI signal sources and the hemodynamic response functions are considerably better understood. Multimodal MRI techniques that include quantitative BOLD, blood flow, blood volume, and oxygen extraction fraction measurements are becoming routine. These techniques have been applied to study cerebral physiology and neuroenergetics under various experimental conditions in normal brains as well as diseased states such as stroke. Spontaneous low-frequency fluctuations of the BOLD fMRI signals also reveal the very dynamic brain at rest. The physiological data from multimodal MRI measurements are very rich in content and much work remains in order to completely decipher the information in these data.

Accelerating Magnetic Resonance Imaging through Compressed Sensing Theory in the Direction space-k

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging method widely used in medical diagnosis. Data in MRI are obtained line-by-line within the K-space, where there are usually a great number of such lines. For this reason, magnetic resonance imaging is slow. MRI can be accelerated through several methods such as parallel imaging and compressed sensing, where a fraction of the K-space lines...

Fiber-optic sensors for monitoring patient physiological parameters: a review of applicable technologies and relevance to use during magnetic resonance imaging procedures.

The issues involved with recording vital functions in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment using fiber-optic sensors are considered in this paper. Basic physiological parameters, such as respiration and heart rate, are fundamental for predicting the risk of anxiety, panic, and claustrophobic episodes in patients undergoing MRI examinations. Electronic transducers are generally hazar...

Sodium imaging of the heart at 7T: design, evaluation and application of a four-channel transmit/receive surface coil array

Background Insight of physiological processes and cellular metabolism makes 23Na-MRI conceptually appealing as non-invasive imaging discipline. Several studies report the applicability of 23Na-MRI for the detection and assessment of acute and chronic heart disease due to increased sodium concentration after myocardial infarctions. Bi-exponential decay of the signal and a low SNR compared to 1H-...

DW-MRI of perfused and thermally controlled neuronal organotypic cultures

Objectives Signal attenuation in Diffusion Weighted MRI (DW-MRI) of the brain originates from multiple sources [1] that are being studied extensively, in order to quantify their relative contributions to the DW-MRI signal in health and disease. Recently it was also suggested that some of these mechanisms can be used to detect neuronal activity directly by DW-MRI [2]. However, sources of physiol...

Investigation of Factors Affecting Body Temperature Changes During Routine Clinical Head Magnetic Resonance Imaging

BACKGROUND Pulsed radiofrequency (RF) magnetic fields, required to produce magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals from tissue during the MRI procedure have been shown to heat tissues. OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between body temperature rise and the RF power deposited during routine clinical MRI procedures, and to determine the correlation between this effect and the body's p...
